Film

To expand on my post yesterday this project has been hard on me so much that I have had to consider if this is something I want to do. What I have realized is that I am unprepared technically to work on films and that for the next three or four years I need to focus on school and an apprenticeship somewhere.

I was told by several people early on that film school was unnecessary and that you could succeed in the industry by just working on sets. While this may be possible for a few most people who make a living doing this go to school. If you do not have technical knowledge of the equipment you are using on set you will spend all your time on set playing catch up with everyone else, this makes learning on the job difficult to impossible.

Sorry

So I realize I haven't posted in awhile, please don't delete your subscription Sarah, but I do have good reason. I have been working 12 hours a day on a movie set. This does not include the 2 hours of driving every day. So I have had little time for internet at home when I get back.

This production has made me realize how much I have left to learn about filmmaking and how far I have to go in this field. It has also made me realize the essential nature of film school if you ever want to work on a professional set. I am currently feeling very unprepared and amateurish when I work.

I will expand on these points later but I am currently zoning out right now and am having trouble completing sentences.

Abolish Public Education

"I believe a man is happier, and happy in a richer way, if he has 'the freeborn mind'. But I doubt whether he can have this without economic independence, which the new society is abolishing. For economic independence allows an education not controlled by Government; and in adult life it is the man who needs, and asks, nothing of Government who can criticise its acts and snap his fingers at its ideology." ~ C.S. Lewis

I like Lewis believe that we should abolish public education and I especially agree with his statement that man should not need anything from his government because if the government is providing economically for someone that person cannot criticize their policies for fear of being punished economically. Even if a person being supported by the government is not politically minded they will most likely support the system of government that gives them the most money, which is bigger government.

C.S. Lewis and the State

"The modern State exists not to protect our rights but to do us good or make us good—anyway, to do something to us or to make us something. Hence the new name ‘leaders’ for those who were once ‘rulers’. We are less their subjects than their wards, pupils, or domestic animals." ~C.S. Lewis

Most people have only read Lewis' fiction but as I recently found out he also wrote many political essays. I shall be investigating these works and will soon have more quotes to share.

Disagreement

"I never learned from a man who agreed with me." ~ Robert Heinlein

I recently read a biography of Ayn Rand who I consider an inspiration for many of my ideas and I was very disturbed by the cultist nature of her life in the later years when she would break up friendships over the slightest disagreement about politics, philosophy even art. For me I have always, as Heinlein said, learned a great deal from those who disagree with me. Respectful discourse of disagreements is not only more educational but, I think, more fun that discussion with someone who agrees completely with you.

Taxes

Today's quote comes from Robert Heinlein

"There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him."

Don't ask me what I want it for, If you don't want to pay some more. Cause I'm the taxman... And you're working for no one but me ~ The Beatles

Today's quote comes from Albert Einstein

"The state is made for man; not man for the state."

Anytime anyone speaks of doing something for the greater good or for society they are making man the possession of the state.

Religion and Politics

Today's quote comes from Mahatma Gandhi

“Those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is.”

The word religion is only used five time in the Bible, two of those times it's used to discuss different sects of Judaism. In James 1:27 the Bible says this of religion.

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."

So I wonder how did we get from that command about religion to the moral majority and the evangelical right or to the concept of social justice? It seems as though many today think that religion has a great deal to do with politics but I disagree. I think as James says we should focus on looking after the least of us and staying pure despite of this world.
